Today, June 20th, is the International Day of the Refugee. We would like to share the story of Valentina and Olena, two Ukrainian refugees who have found hope away from home in one of the Opportunity Homesrun by Mensajeros de la Paz. “We had to leave our country; families have been divided, people have lost their jobs, and we had to start from scratch”, Valentina and Olena share. Their courage and determination are an example of strength in the face of adversity.
Unfortunately, not all stories are the same. Just last week, a tragedy struck us: the shipwreck in Greece where an estimated 500 people onboard are believed to have disappeared. That is why, at Mensajeros de la Paz, we share the commitment of the United Nations to defend human rights and tirelessly work to provide support and hope to those who have been displaced by violence, persecution, war, famines, and disasters caused by climate conditions.
Millions of refugees have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety and protection, and many still struggle to find it. They are in need of dignity and security, and it is our duty to provide them with a safe haven.
On this International Day of the Refugee, let us come together in support of refugees, recognizing their strength and resilience. Together, we can create a more compassionate world filled with hope, even when we are far from home.
